Furry & Feathered Friends

Hi All, the last few posts have featured some of myself and Lucy's other furry friends, so we thought we would introduce you to the whole family.
The little chap above is my cat Ziggy. He is utterly gorgeous and originally belonged to a neighbour who rescued both him and his brother Zach as kittens from a family with a barely restrained Staffie. They went on holiday soon after getting the boys and I was asked to cat-sit for two weeks- who would say no to looking after two gorgeous white kittens??!! When old enough to be let out, Ziggy just kind of followed me home across the road and divided himself between the two houses, gradually moving more and more into my house. When the neighbours moved a few years ago, they asked us if we wanted to keep him as he had sort of adopted us and we agreed- not that we really had much of a choice, Ziggy had decided for us!!

Lucy and her family have a whole menagerie of pets! She has sent me little descriptions of how her pets came to be part of her family so I will quote what she has said.

'Dottie & Lulu came into our lives as tiny playful kittens. We were only meant to be having Dottie, as Lulu was already sold to another family, but when they split them up to go to separate homes they pined for each other constantly, so we ended up with them both! Dottie has always been my baby, Lulu my sister's. Dottie is now living the life as a middle-aged-grumpy-woman who sleeps and eats all day. Lulu on the other hand is a fuss hussy, a real lap cat who will obsessively stretch out on you all the way up to your neck. Both have been known to drool when they are having a good fuss!'

'I won't go into all our passed pets, but Smidge is different in the respect that she came back to us. Smidge came to us as a very, very young, too young, kitten, completely taken over with cat flu. It took us a long time, and lots of vet visits, to get her healthy. She was hit by a car when she was around 1 years old and had to be put to sleep. This is important to Meg (Megmog) who came to us as a very young kitten. We weren't planning on having a third cat again after what happened, it was very upsetting and she was the only pet who had left us too soon. We didn't choose Meg, a friend of a friend contacted me panicked because she had had a kitten, called 'Mouce', dumped on her by a family, who were desperate to get rid of her because they had a newborn baby. The minute we agreed to think about it, she had walked to our doorstep in the pouring rain and left this kitten with us. We couldn't believe our eyes, as she was nearly identical to Smidge in appearance, personality, temperament, but scared of cars. We really believe that she is Smidge reincarnated, particularly because we didn't look for her, she found us. Meg is a very odd kitty cat, she likes to follow Mum around the house, and especially hates to be alone. She cries when nobody is around. She paws at glass, washing the windows we call it, we're not sure why. She doesn't like to sit on laps, but will snuggle up next to you with her head resting on your lap, she loves the fuss but will soon get distracted and try to play fight with your hand!'

(Poppet)

'Poppet is the newest addition to the family. My mum and I volunteer part time at an animal rescue. At the start of the Christmas break, Poppet came into the rescue. Her background is, as far as we know, that she was a stray who an old lady in a home used to feed. However, this old lady had to be taken into hospital so she wanted Poppet to be looked after. Instantly, I felt a connection with her because she reminded me so much of a cross between Dottie and Lulu. She has very thick fur which was completely matted when she first came in, and despite that brushing her was obviously painful, she was very forgiving as she just loved the attention. When I came home for Easter, it turned out that my Mum had fallen in love with her too, so we decided to take her home. Ever since, she has done nothing but cuddle up to everyone, always mewing - something apparently called 'tortitude'!'

'Gertie & Mavis are our resident chickens, pets just like the rest. We got them as young chickens just before laying and they are very well bonded. Gertie lays blue/green eggs, rarely double yolkers, which her breed apparently shouldn't - so we aren't sure what she really is! Mavis lays usual brown eggs. Gertie is particularly noisy, always wanting to announce to the world when she has laid! Both chase each other around if one has something particularly tasty, such as a cherry tomato or a slug! If one goes to lay, because they don't like to be alone, the other will wait in the entrance of their house!'

Lucy has also sent me a photo of a random bunny that she recently found...

'The same day Poppet came home to live with us, me and my friend Stacey found this bunny hopping around her garden in the snow. We couldn't let him stay out there cold, and she was sure she had seen him a couple of weeks back but her sister hadn't managed to catch him. So I got on my knees, clicked at him and he came and sat on my lap! He spent the day snuggled up with us all, loving to lay up on your chest having some fuss, or having some grass to munch on in a cozy cat carrier next to the radiator. We found his owner that night, who lets him roam free in his bunny-proof garden, but about 3 weeks ago had managed to escape and had refused to be caught since!'

Snuggle Moments

There have been quite a lot of snuggly moments here in Sussex. Milo made a new friend out of my brother and had a long snuggle on his chest, pausing computer game play for quite a while!

And earlier on in the day, the cat stopped me from doing any form of work (except photography) when he demanded a cuddle.

Doesn't even look impressed at my taking photos! Honestly, pets! So demanding.

Making Friends

Lucy sent me some photos today of her hamster set up at home. Obviously with six separate cages, and unable to take her hamster apartment shelf, it was going to be interesting to fit everybody in. But she has done it! And the hamsters are making a new friend by the looks of things...

Easter Holidays

Hi All!! Myself and my fluffballs are now happily ensconced at home, having been rescued from Leicester before the snow properly hit and we were trapped. It was a perilous journey home, driving in the dead of night with poor visibility, snow flying into the windscreen and the water flying off the roads, buffeting our poor car when we overtook lorries. It was very dramatic, although I admit the hamsters slept through most of it. They are quite good when it comes to being in travel cages.
We stayed the night at my Aunt and Uncle's. I had to set up minimalistic versions of their cages, and they were on their saucers for a good three hours. Obviously happy to be out of the slightly cramped carriers. Now though, as you can see, they are tucked behind the kitchen table being spoilt with hamster safe table scraps. The cages will also be rotated so poor Patrick (currently bottom) won't be on the bottom for the whole three weeks.

It will be interesting to see what Lucy does with her hamsters when she gets home. Does she take the whole shelving unit? Or try and fit them all in her room? Ahhh, the complications of having six hamsters. Still, wouldn't change them for the world.
