High Rise Hamsters
Lucy's hamsters are so spoilt!! Look at their new snazzy apartment block! All dwarf hammys now have their own separate cage full to the brim of toys and treats, and they are now beautifully presented on the brand-spanking new shelving block! Lucky furbabies!

Baby Food
As a little treat for our hamsters, we try and vary their diet and give them a selection of treats: vegetables, nuts, fruit, mealworms (which they didn't like at all), pasta, and baby food (no chili, rice, citrus, garlic or onion)! Only a little bit and not all the time but Lucy wanted another little jar to turn into a hamster toilet so we treated the hammies to some Cow & Gate Grandpa's Sunday Lunch!
Not all of them were interested and others took some coaxing. I imagine it will all get eaten eventually!!
(Crumpet)
(Muffin)
(Daisy)
(Patrick)
(Nutmeg)
(Poppy)
Some were more interested in exploring or playing on their toys...
(Pip)
(Mabel)
(Milo)
(Pumpkin)
Cages Galore!!
So then, all 10 of our hamsters are now safely ensconced in their respective cages and rooms. Lucy tried re-introducing The Noses and The Robos over Christmas (if you remember they had all fallen out with their partners) but to no avail, so eventually decided to give them each their own cage so they had more room.
Instead of buying the cages new she is buying them off ebay- and has bought two more than she actually needs so that she can chop and change and get the best parts of them all. The leftover bits she is planning to sell along with various other accumulated bits and bobs.
The two cages at the back there are the bin cages, the pink one has Poppy and the purple one temporarily has Nutmeg in (he is waiting for another of the smaller cages). The two grey bottomed ones are Ferplast Mini Dunas with Muffin in the left one and Crumpet on the right. The orange bottomed cage is also a Mini Duna and is little Daisy's home. The red bottomed cage is a Savic Rody cage and has little Pumpkin in.
So hopefully they will all be very happy in their new homes- even Pip has been moved out of his iMac fantasy and into a bin cage!

Discarding The Igloo
For a while now I have been having problems with Milo's igloo bed (in the top right corner- I hasten to add this is NOT what his cage looks like now, he has many more toys and the wheel has been replaced with a flying saucer- this is just what it looked like when I first got him).
I find that when I come to get him out in the evenings, I sometimes have to take the lid off as he is quite a lazy little lad, and it is full of water!
His bedding will also be absolutely soaked and I am having to change it almost daily. Obviously this could end up being quite an expensive exercise plus it's not that nice for him as he has to make his bed every day! So this evening I decided enough was enough...the igloo was going to have to go!!!
I don't really want him to have an open nest as I am worried about him getting cold, and then I remembered! A family member was taken into hospital last week (not for anything serious) and was given one of those cardboard bowls in case of emergencies. Luckily we still had it lying around because I'd had a brain wave!!
They are the perfect shape for a roomy hamster haven! All you have to do is cut off the handles, snip in a door and punch some holes in the roof! This is even bigger than the igloo too so technically it is an upgrade.
Milo seemed quite keen when I introduced him to his new bed.
Of course, once you start making custom furniture for your fluffballs, any cardboard box in your recycling could be a potential place for hide and seek.
Feeling inspired, I went for a rummage and came across a box for our cat's food pouches which seemed perfect!
Just cut off the lid and the spiky bits...
Turn over, and voila!!
I popped this new toy into Pip's iMac Fantasy cage, it only just fit!! But I think he will enjoy playing in it.
I suppose it is slightly ironic that one of the hamsters is living in the cat's food box....but the cat doesn't seem to be at all bothered!!
=D
